What Are Macros? Protein, Carbs and Fats Explained
“Macros” is short for macronutrients — the three things that give food its energy.
The three macros
- Protein — builds and repairs muscle, keeps you full (eggs, meat, dairy, legumes)
- Carbohydrates — your main energy source (oats, fruit, grains)
- Fats — energy, hormones and absorbing vitamins (nuts, seeds, oils)
You need all three — “low-carb” or “low-fat” extremes usually aren’t necessary for most people.
Why people track them
Balancing macros (especially enough protein) helps with energy, fullness and body composition.
